David Solan Engel passed away peacefully at home on August 4, 2017, at the age of 94. He was born on June 17, 1923, in Mineola, Texas to the late Pincus Engel and Rebecca Weingarten Engel and was raised in Sherman, Texas.
After attending Kemper Military School for two years in Bonneville, Missouri, Engel studied liberal arts at Albion College in Albion, Michigan leaving during his junior year in 1943 to enter the Army Air Corps at the San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center. He received his wings for flying twin-engine aircraft in Pampa, Texas...

David Solan Engel passed away peacefully at home on August 4, 2017, at the age of 94. He was born on June 17, 1923, in Mineola, Texas to the late Pincus Engel and Rebecca Weingarten Engel and was raised in Sherman, Texas.
After attending Kemper Military School for two years in Bonneville, Missouri, Engel studied liberal arts at Albion College in Albion, Michigan leaving during his junior year in 1943 to enter the Army Air Corps at the San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center. He received his wings for flying twin-engine aircraft in Pampa, Texas and was commissioned as a second Lieutenant in 1943 flying B-24's and B-29's in non-combat missions. He was discharged in 1945 at the end of World War II and immediately married Martha Abrams. Engel joined Welders Equipment Company in Corpus Christi under his beloved father-in-law Max Abrams. He opened the Victoria division in 1946 making Victoria his home. His son and son-in-law joined him in the seventies. After expanding to 10 locations, Welders Equipment Company was sold in 1996.
Serving in many leadership capacities, Engel was very active in the Victoria community. In 1990 he was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Victoria Rotary Club. He was vice-chairman of the Victoria County Navigation District, organizing the short-line railroad installation and expansion efforts for deepening and widening the Victoria Barge Canal. He fostered joint community relations leading to the creation of the Calhoun County-Victoria County Foreign Trade Zone on which he served as vice-chairman. Engel was also instrumental in Formosa Plastics locating and expanding in Calhoun County.
He served as a director of the Victoria Economic Development Corporation and for a short time as the "interim CEO." He also spent ten years on the Victoria County Airport Commission, retiring as its vice-chairman. In addition, he was a director at Interfirst Bank of Victoria and a director at Victoria Bank and Trust. He was a long-time member of Lions Club of Victoria.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Martha Abrams Engel; children, David and Ann Engel, Margery and Robert Loeb; grandchildren, Rebecca Loeb, Emily Loeb and Sarah Feldman, Philip and Courtney Engel, Karleen and Jared Katzman; and great-grandchildren, Max and Spencer Katzman, Jack Engel.
In addition to his parents Engel was preceded in death by his sister, Hilda Vogel.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Temple B'Nai Israel, 604 N. Main, Victoria, Texas 77901, with Rabbi Jimmy Kessler officiating. Burial will follow at B'Nai Israel Cemetery, 406 W. Trinity, Victoria, Texas, 77901
Pallbearers are: Bob Trott, Robert Briggs, David Robinson, Pat Brown, Dr. Fred Lykes and Dr. Marshall Weiner.
Honorary pallbearers are: Bobby Hewitt, Margaret Clegg, D.B. Lundy, Sam L. Susser, Dale Fowler, Barbara Briggs, and Kyle Noack
