Dr. C. Daniel "Dan" Smith, 80, of Victoria, Texas, passed away at home surrounded by family after a long struggle with COPD on Wednesday, March 8, 2017. He was born December 10, 1936 in Houston to the late Cloid William Watts and Ruth Ashmore Seibert. Cloid Watts died before Dan was born. The late Mervyn Clarence Smith later married Ruth and adopted Dan as his son.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Rosewood Funeral Chapel, 3304 Mockingbird Lane, Victoria, Texas, 77904. Reception will...

Dr. C. Daniel "Dan" Smith, 80, of Victoria, Texas, passed away at home surrounded by family after a long struggle with COPD on Wednesday, March 8, 2017. He was born December 10, 1936 in Houston to the late Cloid William Watts and Ruth Ashmore Seibert. Cloid Watts died before Dan was born. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Rosewood Funeral Chapel, 3304 Mockingbird Lane, Victoria, Texas, 77904. Reception will follow at the home. In lieu of flowers Dr. Dan asked that donations be made to Hospice of South Texas, 605 E. Locust, Victoria, Texas, 77901.

Dan graduated with the class of 1955 from Jefferson Davis High School in Houston, Texas and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston. He served in the Army National Guard and then completed medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas in 1969. He practiced as an emergency room doctor for many years, later became board-certified and practiced in addictionology, and also worked as a prison doctor. He played clarinet and saxophone professionally since high school: Dixieland jazz, particularly in a band that he co-founded made up of UTMB physicians called the Strand Street Six and Seven-Eighths; various Big Bands; and many wind symphonies and community bands. He was an avid Harley rider, proud of his many miles traveled (Iron Butt), fisherman, gourmet cook, and dog-lover.

Survivors include his children Virginia Chapman of Wimberley, Texas, Laura Strudwick and her husband Russell of Portland, Oregon, and Charles Daniel Smith of Lake Jackson, Texas and his grandchildren Mason Kapp of Wimberley, Texas and Juliet Smith of Hilo, Hawaii.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Joseph Walter Chapman of Wimberley, Texas.
